Tour the home that dairy built

One of Ohio County's grandest historic homes. Situated on the banks of Laughery Creek, the original home was built in the late 1800's by the Miller family. A land grant from the U.S. Government provided the family with hundreds of acres across the Laughery Valley, stretching from a few miles east of Hartford to near Dillsboro. Through the years this ultimately led to a family farming fortune that is still evident to this day. The home partially burned down at the turn of the last century and the current stately Victorian was rebuilt in 1917, on parts of the first foundation and layers thick masonry walls. The original out house and milk house still stand to the left and right of the main house, respectively. Some handwritten records of dairy cattle sales still existed on the interior walls of the milk house until 2021 when the deteriorating plaster was carefully removed to preserve the writing for later display. Although records are unclear, the first house was thought to be a Newman house. Timothy Newman was a master builder for local prominent families in the 19th and 20th century. One of his greatest designs (and a historic Indiana Landmark) is an 1846 Greek Revival known as the Speakman House; located 3 miles Northeast. A nearly identical twin still stands on Salem Ridge Road which is not currently listed as a historic landmark and is not known to have been owned by Speakman or Miller. After Speakman's unusual and untimely death on the Ohio River, the property was purchased by the Miller Family. Evidence of a dairy farm is also present here as noted in this historic preservation document, section 7 pages 4 & 5:
